Michael studied Classics and Ancient and Modern History at Oxford (BA, MSt, DPhil) and Cambridge (MPhil). He has held postdoctoral research fellowships at the Freie Universität, Berlin, the Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies, Princeton and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. His research interests lie in the history of the modern study of ancient Greek religion in Europe and North America from the early 19th century onward as well as in comparisons between ancient Greece and China. Michael is currently an associate scholar of the Swedish Institute at Athens, working on the correspondence of Martin Nilsson with Frazer, Evans, Nock and other classicists.
